I can understand hesitation to offer up explanations that "might" be because no one wants to insult someone by implying something that isn't the case. It's touchy. I hope something shifts in the situation.

Thank you for your offer, but we found her. Quite by accident really. We went through the Children's Home Society and they let her know we were looking and so she did a search on the internet under her name and found us. Thank God!

I don't think you have said anything wrong. Judging from what you wrote your mother is one from the more older generation when mothers who surrendered were expected to forget about their child and get on with their lives. This will be a very emotional time for her and try not to worry about her...
